Removal & disposal

Fume Cupboard Removal Without the Headache

Decontamination, safe disconnection and certified disposal of redundant ducted and ductless units, handled end to end by a licensed waste carrier.

Licensed waste carrier CBDU133562

Registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier. Every removal is covered by a waste transfer note, so your duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act is documented.

Contaminated media, filters and the unit itself are tracked from your site to a licensed disposal point. Nothing leaves undocumented.

Removing a fume cupboard is not a strip-out job

A cupboard that has been in service for twenty years holds a history of whatever was worked in it. The liner, the extract duct and the filters all carry residue, and a general contractor with a skip is not the right answer.

We decontaminate before anything is disconnected, isolate services properly, and take the unit out in a controlled sequence. The building is left ready for whatever comes next, whether that is a replacement unit or a repurposed room.

If the unit is being replaced rather than retired, we can handle the testing of the new one on the same programme.

  1. 01 Survey and method statement What the unit was used for, what services feed it, how it comes out and what route it takes through the building.
  2. 02 Thorough decontamination The interior, extract shell and ductwork are cleaned down, and contaminated filter media is bagged for licensed disposal.
  3. 03 Safe isolation of services Electrical, gas, water and drainage capped and made safe, with isolation recorded rather than assumed.
  4. 04 Strip-out and making good Unit and ductwork removed, roof or wall penetrations sealed, the working area cleared and left clean.
  5. 05 Extract system rebalancing Where units shared a manifold, remaining cupboards are rechecked so removing one does not degrade the others.
  6. 06 Documentation Waste transfer notes, disposal certification and a record of the work, issued for your compliance file.

Sustainable disposal

Reuse before landfill, where the unit allows it

Not every redundant cupboard is scrap. A unit taken out because a department moved, or because a refurbishment changed the layout, is often mechanically sound.

Where that is the case we reclaim the unit and its components. Our sister company Holliday Fielding Hocking refurbishes and resells fume cupboards, which is how we can offer a refurbished replacement at significantly less than new.

Where a unit genuinely is at end of life, it is broken down and the materials separated for recycling rather than sent whole to landfill.

Replacing rather than removing?

A refurbished unit, fully tested and commissioned, typically costs a fraction of new. We can quote removal and replacement as one job.

Why HTS

The people who service them are the people who remove them

LICENSED

Not subcontracted out

We hold the waste carrier licence ourselves, so the chain of custody stays with one company from disconnection to disposal.

SPECIALIST

Engineers, not labourers

The same DBS-checked engineers who test and service cupboards do the removals, so nothing is disturbed that should not be.

NATIONWIDE

One contractor, any site

Multi-site clearances handled on one programme and one set of paperwork, wherever in the UK the buildings are.

ACCOUNTABLE

Fixed quote, no surprises

Priced from a survey rather than a phone call, so the figure you approve is the figure you pay.

Removal questions

No. The liner, ductwork and filter media may hold chemical residue, which makes them controlled waste. Disposal has to go through a licensed carrier with a waste transfer note, and the duty of care sits with you as the producer.

Yes. Our registration number is CBDU133562 and can be checked against the Environment Agency’s public register. We would encourage you to check any contractor’s number before they take waste off your site.

A single unit is usually a one-day job. Whole-lab clearances are programmed around your access, and most education work happens in half terms or summer shutdown. We sheet and protect routes through occupied buildings.

It can, if they share an extract manifold or fan. Removing a unit changes the system resistance and can push the remaining cupboards out of specification. We recheck and rebalance the remaining units as part of the work.

Often, yes. A sound unit can be decontaminated, moved and recommissioned in its new position. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the age of the unit and the extract arrangement at the destination, which the survey will establish.
